Designing an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) for ourselves as the Client was an interesting project in many ways.  First, the design had to fit within a triangular space in our yard.  From there, our design criteria revolved around making the unit ADA accessible and elderly friendly, enhancing privacy by selecting the window locations and views, advocating energy efficiency with thick walls, solar panels and a battery, and fitting the architectural design aesthetic of our neighborhood. Our design team successfully collaborated to implement these design elements.  The vaulted ceilings and central clerestory windows make this 699 sq. ft. home feel spacious and inviting with plentiful natural daylight.  In this case “Designing for Your Reality” was designing for OUR reality, and we are happy with the result.
